Spent Grain Doggie Treats

I was talking with a buddy of mine who said he was given a recipe to make dog treats from spent grain. Being that I don't own a dog but my Girlfriend does I thought I would give it a shot and see how they turned out and if the dog actually liked them. Could be a good use for spent grains, though I am only going to be using 5 cups.

Spent Grain Doggie Treats

5 cups: Spent Grains (Chocolate Rye Porter III)
2 cups: AP Flour
2 Eggs
3 cups: Peanut Butter (Creamy)

Optional:
Bacon Grease (not used in my recipe)

Directions:
Pre-Heat your oven to 350 degrees F. Mix all ingredients together, just use your hands you can wash them off later. Once you have everything mixed in place the mixture on a cookie sheet. You want to roll out the mixture as thin as you can on the cookie sheet and go ahead and cut out the cookies how you want them to look. Cover the cookie sheet with tin foil, so you wont make a mess in your oven. Once the oven is up to temp, place cookie sheet into oven for 30 minutes.

Once the 30 minutes are up take them out of the oven and set the temperature to 225. Cut the cookies apart fully until they are loose and then spread them out and place back into the oven for 3+ hours or until they are bone dry. The cookies need to be dry or they will mold easily. The drying time will vary depending on the thickness of your treats.

To store just make sure they are in a dry place they should last up to a week. If you make a big batch place in a zip top freezer bag and freeze them, they should last for up to 6 months there.

Update 1.7.2010: Dog ate these things up like a fat kid on candy. I think I will try to make a batch with every beer I make.
