Adding Coffee
I've been looking around for a while to see what exactly is the best way to extract coffee to put into beer. I wanted to add coffee to 1 gallon of my Brown Ale to experiment with. I went with the Peru Norte from Primavera Coffee here in town cause it seems to be the best coffee to put into beer. Most notably the Good People Oatmeal Coffee Stout has it in there due to the fact it goes quite well with Willamette hops. So I found that the best way was to cold extract the coffee in a french press over night. This will extract the coffee flavor, but none of the bitterness and oils that come with brewing coffee, which is what I want. Personally I would love to just add my beer on top of the ground coffee beans but I have no way of filtering out the crushed beans from the beer. I guess having a few floaters wouldn't be too bad but I decided to go with just cold brewing the coffee in a french press over night and adding it the next morning. Right now the taste is a bit over powering. I used 2.5oz of ground coffee beans to 1 gallon of beer. I am thinking I might dilute it a bit with the main Brown Ale beer and see how that works.
